An American-born painter and graphic artist, Whistler spent most of his creative years in Paris and London. He’s probably best known for his portrait painting of his mother, Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother.
But, my favorite Whistler painting is Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl 1862. I purchased a rather large framed print of this oil painting from an antique shop years ago. It hangs on the wall in a guest bedroom reminding me of my daughter, the one with the naturally curly brown hair.
I found reference to another Whistler painting called Symphony in White, No. 2, also known as The Little White Girl. It’s of a woman wearing a white dress standing by a fireplace holding a fan in her hand. So, it appears Whistler used the theme of women dressed in white for some of his other paintings too.
